Before our community can tackle the bigger issues, we need to be safe.
And the best part is that we don’t need to wait for new tax money or legislative action. We can do so much right now!
- Neighborhood Watch programs are a great way for communities to band together and look out for one another. When neighbors take an interest in the welfare of one another as individuals and as a whole, it strengthens the bonds of community and creates a safer living environment. https://www.seattle.gov/police/crime-prevention/block-watch
- Young minds need to stay active in positive ways. By supporting and mentoring the next generation, by keeping them involved as a part of the communities where they live, we create safer neighborhoods. Studies show dramatic decreases in crime and better living conditions where adults take a proactive interest in the youth.
- Cleaning and greening vacant or neglected lots/green-spaces. This would include pea-patch or community garden development. This simple strategy employed at the community level and requiring comparatively low resources is proven to reduce crime significantly. Some statistics say there is a crime reduction of as much as 30%, and this includes violent crime and gun violence. More neighbors are more likely to be outside in their yards in communities where this program is implemented, thus creating even safer environments by building relationship among neighbors. I will partner with legislative measures and provide leadership and momentum at the community level that support these and other steps.
